Writer's Block: Bite Me

From Dr. Polidori's Lord Ruthven to Stephenie Meyer's Edward Cullen, the annals of vampire lore are filled with attractive, charming bloodsuckers. Which one would you most want to be bitten by?

Tweeting my brain waves

A listing of my tweets should tell you what I'm thinking about today...

-For those wanting an official bio of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor: http://is.gd/F3TI She is absolutely qualified.

-Sotomayor has the broad experience needed to be a justice, and has done so much that would serve her well on the Court.

-To wit: stellar education, gov't prosecutor (crim), private practice/civil litigation, writing and teaching experience, service orgs.

-Also, she kind of reminds me of The Oracle in The Matrix, which can only be a plus.

-Some summaries of Sotomayor's appellate opinions, for the curious: http://is.gd/F6I9

-What's wrong with Hollywood today: it actually wants to remake the Buffy movie, sans Joss Whedon. http://is.gd/FbZp Blasphemers and morons.

-Wow. Way to wimp out, California Supreme Court: http://is.gd/FlmH

-RT @anamariecox: "CA Supreme Court follows People vs. KFC precedent: no more gay marriage except for 18,000 who already used coupon." (v ...

-Shorter CA S. Ct.: "Well, it's alright for SOME." Where the hell in American jurisprudence is that still allowed? This. Is. Ridiculous.

-@bitterandrew I'm a lawyer, and I can't understand it. It's so half-assed, and I can't think of any precedent for it.

-You know what you get when a "majority" gets to decide the basic rights of a minority? Slavery. Segregation. Discrimination.

-I hereby make a motion to call Ross Douthat "The Douchehat" for as long as he writes like one, i.e., likely always. http://is.gd/Fw4X

-Oh, and California? Time for a constitutional convention, seriously. Your amendment process is the fundamental underlying problem here.

Writer's Block: Back to School

What fictional high school—from tv, film, or a book—would you most like to attend? Or would you rather never go near high school again, fictional or otherwise?

Sunnydale High School, of course. But only if I get to be part of the Scooby Gang.

Bored now.

Via [info]antiquehighheel:

When you see this, post another Buffy quote in your LJ. Let's see how long this can go on.

"If every vampire who said he was at the crucifixion was actually there, it would have been like Woodstock. ... I was actually at Woodstock. That was a weird gig. I fed off a flowerperson, and I spent the next six hours watchin' my hand move."

Snow in Chicago

On a clear day you can see...

...your breath on the air, the wind whipping people down the street, and the long janes you had to put on this morning under your work trousers. All of which is meant to convey to you all that it is bloody cold here in Chicagoland. It's always unsettling to get up and check CLTV on the telly and see the little temperature reader in the bottom right corner of the screen read 0 degrees. But that's Chicago in winter for you.

Even more unsettling is that it's supposed to get up to 50 degrees F by Sunday. Hmmm, global warming much?

Whilst trying to keep warm, I will be checking on coverage in Iowa (i.e., reading snarky blogs about what's going on in Iowa), where my prediction of the winners on NYE was Obama/Huckabee, but in light of Huckabee's latest gaffe, is now Obama/Romney. If you don't feel like checking out the Iowa stuff, I offer you this absolutely brilliant breakdown of the Republican candidates as Buffy villians from Cogitamus to look at instead.

(And by the way, Illinois voters, make sure you're registered by Tuesday, January 8, so you can vote in our primary - check out the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners for info.)

Have a pumpkin and a cocktail - by Liz

"How do you like my darkness now?"*

In no particular order...

-It's chilly out today, and I am loving it.

-My sister moves to the city tomorrow!

-In honor of my reading issues 1-6 of the Buffy Season 8 comic (which is excellent):

You scored as Buffy Summers, You are a very strong individual. You do, however, have some trouble admitting how you truly feel. You've experienced a lot during your life, but you more than manage. Always willing to help, you're a great friend.

I've got the goods

Buffy Season 8 comics from Dark Horse, Numbers 1 and 2:

Stopped into Graham Crackers over on East Madison (I was the only female in the place, natch, and I watched a couple of the guys in front of me drop 60 to 80 bucks each on stacks of comics) to finally pick up my Buffy comics. Yeah, I'm a geek. Yeah, I'm OK with it.

"Monday is a lame way to spend 1/7 of your life."*

You may have noticed (or not, I don't know what you folks are in the habit of noticing all the time) that I didn't write on Friday. The reason for that is that I had a nasty hangover from going out to celebrate C's birthday on Thursday night. It wasn't fair, you know. I did everything right: ate dinner, drank roughly 6-7 drinks (as far as I remember, and I think I remember) over the course of about 4 1/2 hours, stuck with one kind of booze, drank a couple of glasses of water, slept in (I had taken the morning off in anticipation of being out late), etc. And then I still suffered through a splitting headache all day, fatigue, nausea, and er, I was sick (it was ew - let's just say it's a good thing I have an office now, 'cause I wouldn't have made it all the way to the restroom). This is not fair, damn it. Anyway, I was too ugh all day to even update. But I still managed to go see The Namesake with [info]girlvii (it was quite a wonderful film) and to buy yet more books, because really, the piles of unread books I have stacked on floor already were getting, you know, lonely and starved for fresh company.

Saturday was shopping for C's birthday gift(s), including a trip to Chicago Comics to look for the new Buffy comics, which I have to go back and buy on Thursday. I've been getting back into graphic stuff lately (OK, in the last few days). I picked up Tales of the Vampires and The Crow (which was such a pleasure to revisit) over the weekend. I took this pic:

It's a spire on a church close to my place. As usual, my photography skills are blah, but that's a cool spire regardless.

Saturday night was C's birthday party, at which there was a real, live belly dancer. She was awesome. I envied her body-confidence (she was pretty curvy, and she just showed it off).

Yesterday I met up with some friends from Michigan and bought more fucking books. I'm addicted. It was a good day catching up and showing them a bit of "my" Chicago.

Random: Will someone out there in the world please buy me this place? Because really, I could be so happy in a little spot like that. I don't know that I'd ever need to leave it. *Swoon*
