CollegeLoanAssistanceAct is a pet project I work on with a friend of mine. We put the site together to help create a buzz about a bill proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives: H.R. 2505, which would, in layman's terms, allow people who have consolidated their student loans to refinance to get a lower interest rate. Right now, when student loan rates are around 3%, most past borrowers who consolidated are stuck at a rate between 7 and 9%. That means we pay out a ton each month, and it all goes to interest. It blows, and makes us broke all the time, not to mention the fact that it punishes us for wanting a higher education.

So, we created the site, and we created an online petition to go along with the main site, and we also linked to a message board. Today the petition hit 1000 signatures. We've been working on all this since about July, so 1000 signatures probably doesn't seem like much. But the petition has snowballed on its own, without prodding from us, for the last few weeks.

I also have been chatting with a guy who knows the Congresswoman who proposed the bill, and she and her staff now know about us. So I'm hoping this starts some real buzz. I'd like to see this on 20/20 or Dateline or something.
